Mermaid Dancer


All right, here is a mermaid doll I designed for my nieces. She can either be a mermaid, or you can remove the tail and play with her as a human. You need to know how to both knit and crochet for this pattern. I tried to be as clear as I could be, but I'm sorry for any confusing bits.

Worsted weight yarn
Size 7 double pointed knitting needles
Size G/6 crochet hook

Doll:
Head- Cast on 6
Rnd 1: Work as i-cord
Rnd 2: kfb around (12 stitches)
Rnd 3, 5: Knit
Rnd 4: (K 1, kfb) around (18 stitches)
Rnd 6: (K 2, kfb) around (24 stitches)
Rnd 7-11: Knit
Rnd 12: (K 2, k2tog) around (18 stitches)
Rnd 13: Knit
Rnd 14: (K 1, k2tog) around (12 stitches)
Rnd 15-17: Knit
Stuff
Shoulders- Rnd 18: K, (kfb twice), k 4, (kfb twice), k3 (16stitches)
Rnd 19: K 2, (kfb twice), k 6, (kfb twice), k 4 (20stitches)
Rnd 20: K 3, (kfb three times), k 7, (kfb three times), k 4 (28stitches)
Rnd 21: K 5, (kfb three times), k 9, (kfb three times), k 6 (32 stitches)
Rnd 22: Knit
Rnd 23: K 4, place next 6 stitches on holder, cast on 2, k 10, place next 6 stitches on holder, cast on 2, k 6 (24 stitches and 12 stitches on holders)
Body- Rnd 24-44: Knit
Rnd 45: K 11, place next 12 stitches on holder, cast on 2, k 1 (14 stitches and 12 stitches on holder) redistribute stitches over three needles.
Leg- Rnd 46-56: Knit
Rnd 57: K 3, k2tog, k 5, k2tog, k 2 (12 stitches)
Rnd 58-69: Knit
Rnd 70: K2tog around (6 stitches)
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through stitches and pull tight to close hole. Fasten off and stuff leg and body.
2nd leg- Move stitches from holder onto needle and pick up 4 stitches from crotch (16 stitches)
Rnd 1: Knit around, k2tog twice by crotch (14 stitches)
Rnd 2-11: Knit
Rnd 12: K 3, k2tog, k 5, k2tog, k 2 (12 stitches)
Rnd 13-24: Knit
Rnd 25: K2tog around (6 stitches)
Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through stitches and pull tight to close hole. Fasten off and stuff leg.
Arms (make 2)- Move 6 stitches from shoulder holder onto needle, pick up 4 stitches from sides of arm hole. (10 stitches)
Rnd 1-17: Knit
Rnd 18: K2tog around (5 stitches)
Stuff arm.Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through stitches and pull tight to close hole. Fasten off. Sew hole on head shut.

Tail:
Cast on 24 stitches and join in the round.
Rnd 1-5: (K 2, p 2) around
Rnd 6-20: Knit
Rnd 21: K 10, k2tog, k 10, k2tog (22 stitches)
Rnd 22-25: Knit
Rnd 26: K 9, k2tog, k 9, k2tog (20 stitches)
Rnd 27-30: Knit
Rnd 31: K 8, k2tog, k 8, k2tog (18 stitches)
Rnd 32-35: Knit
Rnd 36: K 7, k2tog, k 7, k2tog (16 stitches)
Rnd 37-40: Knit
Rnd 41: Divide stitches onto two needles and hold needles together. Take a third needle and insert through front loop of first stitch on front needle and through front loop of first stitch on back needle, draw yarn through both stitches. Continue in this manner until hole has been knitted closed and you have 8 stitches on one needle.You will now turn your work and knit in rows
Fins- Row 1-10: Kfb, k to last stitch, kfb (10,12,14,16,18,20,22,24,26,28 stitches)
Bind off and weave in tails.

Shirt:
Cast on 28 and join in the round
Rnd 1-8: Knit
Rnd 9: (K 6, kfb) around (32 stitches)
Rnd 10: (K 3, kfb) around (40 stitches)
Rnd 11-20: Knit
Bind off. (switch to crochet) Join to top of work (cast on edge) with slip stitch, ch 8, sk 8 stitches, sl st, 7 sc, ch 8, sk 7 stitches, sl st, fasten off and weave in tails.

Dress:
Cast on 28 and join in the round.
Rnd 1: Knit
Rnd 2,4,6,8: (K 1, p 1) around
Rnd 3,5,7: (P1, k 1) around
Rnd 9: (K 6, kfb) around (32 stitches)
Rnd 10: (K 3, kfb) around (40 stitches)
Rnd 11-25: Knit
Rnd 26: (K 4, kfb) around (48 stitches)
Rnd 27-31: Knit
Rnd 32, 34: (K 1, p 1) around
Rnd 33, 35: (P 1, k 1) around
Bind off in seed stitch. (switch to crochet) Join to top of work (cast on edge) with slip stitch, ch 8, sk 8 stitches, sl st, 7 sc, ch 8, sk 7 stitches, sl st, fasten off and weave in tails.

Hair: Cut lengths of yarn twice the length you want hair to be. Fold yarn over hook and insert hook through a stitch on head. Pull the ends of yarn through the loop on hook and tighten. (Think latch-hooking) Repeat until the doll has a full head of hair. Style to taste.
